THEN and NOW

True to form, I'd like to begin with a quick update:

1. Let's start with Peru:
I had an amazing (but difficult) job....

I had amazing friends....

I lived with one of those amazing friends in an amazing apartment....

I ate amazing food...

I really REALLY miss Lima.

2. For Christmas, I directed this year's Brunsvik version of the Nativity story:

3. We were able to bury our dear Uncle Ben on Jan 19th - 4 years after his disappearance.

4. I've recently become partial to the following:

1. The Office, or more specifically, Kevin from the office. 2. Sugar Free Dove Chocolate      3. Documentaries about ag/food                                           industry and the like

The job hunt continues. I am back to my old ways: talk radio, bike riding, writing and the Farmer's Market. I am ecstatic about the new Sex and the City movie coming out in May. In fact, I shed a tear during the previews. 2010 is looking promising.
I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. Happy (very) late New Year.

besitos!

halo

Well, its mayo and my time has flown!! I've been here five months already. My job is going well -- I am learning a lot. I guess they say the best way to learn is to teach. =) There are a lot of extreme personalities that have made the whole experience interesting thusfar. My students are AWESOME!!! There are so many that want to learn English so badly. The school system is verrrrry different than what I am used to but I'm adjusting. I work with 3 other Americans at the colegio and we have a blast. All the Peruvian teachers are awesome too. I've found many kindred spirits among them.

I have a great ward here too. The YSA group is a decent size and they have a lot of fun activities. They are all very helpful and supportive (even with all my Spanish mistakes!)

Javier's Mom and sister both just got back from cruises to the Carribeann. I was glad to have them back, as the level of estrogen in the house was lacking. Cati brought me back a new chord for my Macbook so I now have a functioning computer!

Auriel called on Mother's Day and I got to hear her via speakerphone on my mom's cell. She sounds great. Such a treat!

I've been offered a few positions teaching privately on the side during the evenings. Its good money but I have no desire to work after a 10 or 12 hour work day...none whatsoever. I am focused on waiting for my two visits! Melanie is coming in June and my mom is coming in July. I'm counting down the days! =)

Hugs and kisses to everyone back home!

Oooh, those summer nights...!

I have officially started working at my school in La Molina. So far, its a lot of work! My students begin classes March 2nd so I am furiously running around trying to prepare my lessons and classrooms. Yes, classroomS. I teach both 5th and 8th graders. I am also on a team of teachers that are going to run the school magazine. This should all keep me very occupied. I have had some time this week to work on my own writing though. I've had a lot of ideas for my book, so hopefully they keep coming.

This month we've gone to the beach a few times. We stayed in Playa Asia twice -- once with Javie's friend Renzo (lovingly called Kung Fu Panda) and his friend Magali. They both have beautiful houses on the beach. Both times we received wonderful welcomes by their families. At night we ventured over to the club scene and danced for hours. Here in Peru, the discos are open until 6 or 7 in the morning. A red bull is a happy site at 3 in the morning. When Javier and I were taking the bus back to Lima....we had to chase about 30 busses. Everyone ruuuuuuns to the bus and pushes and shoves at the door. Usually the bus can only take 2 or 3 more people and then they leave. Then the next bus comes and you must ruuuuuun to wherever it decides to pull over. This is repeated until you somehow manage to be the first in line or a bus happens to be empty and allows all of you on board. It was frustrating at first, but the site of these people running full speed with their coolers and huge bundles of who knows what -- began to be quite amusing. Javier keeps telling me "you need to look rude." This way, you look like you know what you are doing at all times and people don't want to mess with you. I have mastered my rude face (some would argue years ago). I have definitly noticed a difference in how less people talk to you/bother you when you look rude.

Also, we celebrated Valentine's Day this year at Bisteka in Miraflores. It is an all-you-can-eat place (a little pricey). The food was excellent. Naturally, I stuffed myself with sushi sushi sushi and lots of chocolate covered strawberries. They had a lot of Peruvian food too. We stayed for three hours and ate as much as we could....Javier ended up throwing up on the way out. That should tell you how much we ate. We had a great time.

Lastly, I have officially mastered the combis in lima. Combis are the main form of public transporation here. Some people call them "chicken busses." I haven't seen a chicken on one yet, but I have seen many other odd things. My first combi was with Javier's mom when we went to Gamarra. This time, Javier and I were going to my school. I was trying to learn the routes I would have to take each day. When I was exiting the combi, the conductor accused me of not paying the 50 cent soles. I turned and told him I already paid, as I caught my foot on the door. I landed outside the combi in a lot of pain. I looked down at my leg and blood was running down my entire shin. I had cut myself on the door....somehow. So there I was, standing on the street with a bloody leg. I ran to a kiosk and demanded some napkins. I tried to get the blood to stop but it took a while. Now I have a lovely scar. So, no matter where I end up in life, Peru will always be with me.

That same day, I took the wrong combi back to San Borja. I ended up in a not so nice area and had to walk almost 20 blocks to get to the main street I needed to be at. Not only was it a stupid mistake that cost me s/1 but it gave me a chance to, once again, use my rude face. Its amazing how well it works. If you look nice and approachable you are a greater target for danger. I made my way quicklly to the right street and arrived sweaty and irritable. Since then, I am happy to report, I have had no combi trouble.

Happy late Valentine's Day to all my loved ones!

Enero en Lima

Well I have been here about a month. Today I signed a contract with a school in La Molina to teach for the school year (March-December). This employment comes as a result of many prayers from my fam and friends. I am SO GLAD TO HAVE A JOB!!!! The job market here isn't amazing, so I have been a little frustrated these past few weeks. I get my class assignment next Wednesday. In the meantime, I have much to do to prepare for my teaching year. For starters, I need to venture over to Gamara (the Peruvian version of a swap meet/Amvets/my mother's idea of heaven) to buy some cheap blazers and blouses. I need to look the teacher part. =)

Also, last week Javier and I went to the ORISHA'S CONCERT! It was awesome!! We had a blast dancing and fighting the Lima traffic. This last weekend we went to Peru's version of Lucha Libre fights. They are a bunch of locals that love the sport so their club does the fights for free. The kids got really into it. They had some funny characters for the fighters too. One of our friend's is the newest fighter. He is probably 6'5" and over 200 lbs. He is a giant!

Here are a few pictures from the concert/wrestling tournament:

LIMA, PERU

Now I live here!
This is Lima - a gorgeous, busy and dangerous city with lots of history

This is a beach near Mancora.

Hello everyone! Well I am in Lima now. I left L.A. December 28th and I arrived here on the 29th. Emily and Kris took me to the airport - which was such a blessing. We had so much fun on the car ride down. I LOVE those two. Javier (a very dear friend I met in Cusco last time I was in Peru) picked me up. He was right on time! I was so excited to see him after being in airports for over 30 hours.

We left the next day for Mancora. Its a cute little beach town just a few hours from the Peru/Ecuador border. Javier's family invited me to spend New Year's with them there. They rented a beautiful house on the beach. It was so nice to relax for a few days. Cati (Javier's Mom) and Fred (Catí's boyfriend) treated us to wonderful meals and a boatride in Tumbes (the town where Pizzaro first landed). I got sick after eating a regional ceviche dish in Tumbes. This was a real bummer because I love ceviche and am a little more nervous after a verrrryy long evening in the bathroom. =) I had a very lovely New Yea'r's doing what I love to do....dancing!!

Now I am back in Lima and job hunting. Javier's family has been so wonderful and welcoming. We have gone to a beach near Lima. It is a Peru I have never known before --- a bunch of rich Peruvian yuppies. Ironically the beach mansionettes are inside a gated community while just outside are the shacks and poor people. I have had some interesting conversations about wealth concentration in the country. Although Javier says its the "real Peru" I just smile and shake my head.

I have tried Chifa (Peruvian Chinese food) and many other traditional dishes. Elena, the family's assistant (maid) is an excellent cook. I am dying for some MEXICAN FOOD. I need spice and cilantro and SALSA. My tounge needs to burn. The food here has much flavor but no SPICE. I lowered myself to eating Hot Doritos hoping to get my fix.

Tonight we are going bowling and tomorrow to a goodbye party for one of our friends that is leaving for Spain to study. I send my love to all of you!

After I got back from Costa Rica, I surprised Nanny in Utah. Although it was a short visit, we had a lot of fun. I got to see all my cousins (who are getting so big!). I felt very short because all of Aunt Debbies kids are like 10 feet tall. I ate so much food while I was there -- Nana and Carol are quite the cooks. Poor Papa was sick. He was in bed most of the time but was still chipper despite the fact that he felt like crap.

On my way back, I stopped in Salt Lake and visited my dear friend Jane and her husband Jordan. Jordan goes to law school and UofU and Jane works for an amazing public relations firm in dowtown Salt Lake. We went to see GBH's grave, the Body Exhibit and shopped downtown. We laughed at all out silly memories of freshman year at UC Davis. Jane is an amazing friend. I love her dealy and can't wait for our next get together.

:::la pura vida:::

For my graduation present to myself I took 3 and a half weeks off to go to Costa Rica. A friend from work told me she has always wanted to go there so I invited her along for the ride. Our trip was AMAZING. We ended up spending some time in Nicaragua as well. Erica is a very animal/nature person so she cooked up a lot of stuff to do in the jungles in the north. We hiked two volcanoes (one in Costa Rica and one in Nicaragua), saw a ton of wildlife (no sloths though...), drove on the most dangerous roads I have ever seen, watched los tortugas lay their eggs and laughed the whole way. Erica was the navigator. Auriel will be surprised to hear that because she knows I am a map hog. However, I was less timid on the horrible roads and I wanted to get to places fast so I did most of the driving. We avoided Tamarindo and places like that because we wanted to avoid teenie boppers in bikinis and guys looking for their next exotic makeout. We met so many interesting people in both countries and have a lot of fun stories that we brought back. Enjoy the photos!
